Annie Duke has a B.Sc Architecture (Hons) and B. Architecture from Sydney University. Since graduating in 2004 she has been working in her own architectural practice, operating Barraminnow Whole Design as founding partner since 2009 and now runs making space design studio encompassing her art and building design practice. She is currently building a home for her family using an innovative combination of flexible rammed earth and hemp masonry construction.
Annie is involved with numerous community groups. She is a long-standing committee member of the Braidwood Urban Landcare Group and was a founding member of the Braidwood Academy of Creative Arts. Annie works part time as General Manager of Operations for this youth-focussed arts charity. She is deeply involved in developing the Braidwood Common as a creative, cultural and agricultural common – a shared natural space for recreation and education.
I’m a sole-practitioner building designer, an artist and maker with an interest in traditional and contemporary fibre arts.
My architectural practice focuses on sustainability and creating healthy environments.
I’m owner-building my family home in Braidwood NSW using a hybrid construction system of flexible-form rammed earth and hemp masonry construction. I love the building process, materiality, the play of light and the influence buildings have on the quality of human experience.
Annie travelled widely prior to commencing university studies and worked in a range of roles in retail, hospitality, agriculture and building, giving her empathy, a broad understanding and rich life experience. She has raised three children and pursues a grounded and balanced life within the small and diverse community of Braidwood. She endeavours to grow community resilience and well-being, protect and enhance the natural world, grow food and make beautiful things in a way that nourishes her inner-maker, and celebrates and honours the remarkable place in the world that is her home.
