Preserving remnants of an early stone cottage, this project peeled back layers of unsympathetic extensions, carefully retaining fragments of history in the various brick and stone chimneys and hearths.
The works carefully resolved issues of rising damp and rain ingress that have gradually degraded the delicate and historic built fabric. The new works provide a cohesive transition from the precious remnant of a colonial dwelling into an inspiring modern living space. Built in hemp masonry, with a heated thermal mass floor, this house is beautiful to the eye and touch and performs thermally to create an efficient, cosy and elegant home. The building creates a perfect backdrop for the artist-owner’s art collection and artworks and sits peacefully within the country garden setting.
